Haley Bartels is a Los Angeles-based screenwriter.

She received her MFA in Screenwriting from the American Film Institute, and, prior to that, her BA in English from UCLA. She has also studied at both the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute in New York, and the Moscow Art Theater (МХАТ).

She is an Academy Nicholl Fellow for her script PUMPING BLACK, which placed second on the 2022 Black List. Her horror feature, THE GREAT GOD PAN, was included on the 2021 Blood List. She has been featured in MovieMaker Magazine and has appeared on their podcast. Her latest interview is available via Go Into the Story, the official blog of the Black List.

When she’s not writing, you’ll find her cycling in Griffith Park, holding a stack of Kurosawa DVDs in the checkout line at Vidiots, or at Sunset Nursery agonizing over whether she has room (she doesn’t) for the plant she’s about to buy.

She lives in LA with her partner, who is a comedy writer, and two very ridiculous dogs — a strategy she highly recommends to anyone who spends most of their time writing about murder.
